John Tyler Elementary School Reviews

I have the greatest 6th graders ever. I teach U.S. History, my classes are on task every day. We have fun learning History and my students and I are are totaly into the challenges we face together. I also have the greatest group of parents any teacher could ask for. They send in supplies, support from home and keep me informed. And regardless of what some may think, we have the greatest Administrative team a student, parent or teacher could dream of. Watch the Tigers and listen for the roar.

My son has been in this school 6 yrs now and I must say, this school is going down hill. They have rezoned yet again and still have overcrowding in the classrooms in spite of adding on a wing to a newly constructed building. This year, something new- some grades have 2 teachers to a classroom to accommodate over 30 kids in 1 classroom! The discipline needs improvement too. Kids are getting away with too much and they know it. Lots of bad attitude kids and bullying. Dont want to 'suspend' kids- wont look good on the schools record from what I heard. My kids have never written a book report this whole time in this school. Teachers are forced to focus their teaching only on what is needed to pass the SOL's for accreditation. On a positive note, there are many great teachers who care and do a great job.

This is our first year with John Tyler. My daughter is in kindergarten. I feel many improvements could be made, but overall I think they do a good job. I commend portsmouth schools for working so hard to beat their bad reputation.

JT is a great school. I have had children in the Portsmouth City School System since 1993 and am quite pleased in the much needed inprovements made by our Superintendent. The teachers and staff have always been quite willing to meet my concerns in a positive manner. The school is fully accredited, and I know the work that my 2nd grader routinely does - I did not do in the 2nd grade! PTA and parental involvement could be better, as we came from Churchland Elementary where it was quite high. But that does not reflect on the school. Keep up the good work John Tyler - this family in Portsmouth is very pleased!

I have two children that attent this school and in my opinion it is one of the best schools in Portsmouth. They could improve on having extra activities for the children to join. Parental involvment could improve but that lies with the parents not the school. I am sure every teacher would welcome you into the class if you wanted to help. All the teachers there seem to care about the children and do there best with what they are given to work with. My hat is off to all of them and every teacher. It takes a special person to begin with to want to sit in a room all day with our children and take the time to teach. Maybe we should all stop complaining and appreciate these wonderful people who dedicate their lives to our children. To all the staff at J.T.- Keep up the great work!

Horrible school, children are seldom disciplined. Classes are overcrowded. The teachers act like they are burnt out! There may be 1 or 2 good teachers in the school. Extra curricular activities consist of chorus and that's it. Thank god for the music teacher or we wouldn't even have that. For this to be a new school it sure is in a state of disrepair.

This is a wonderful school. The children are for the most part well mannered. The parents try to be a part of what is going on. Papers are sent home two to three times a week and information is always given on upcoming events. Field trips are planned and the children are a part of the classroom decisions that are made. The staff is friendly and is willing to go the extra mile for the children. As with every school there are some things that could improve. The PTA has gone down hill a little, but with help from parents is trying to raise again. The building is over crowded, by the staff does the best they can to acommadate. The school is fully state accredited. Not all schools can say that. Thanks JT for a job well done.

This is a good school. The teacher care about the children and go out of their way to make sure that their needs are meet. As in every school not everyone will be statisfied. Keep up the good work and have a wonderful school year.

My 2 children went to JTES this past school year. I was very dissapointed with the treatment my daughter that is in special ed. recieved the first 2 months of school. My other child who had been in 2nd grade but in a 3rd grade reading class the year prior to coming to JTES, was put in 3rd grade reading again due to 4th grade reading classes being too full. So she did the same things with the same books all year. There were also very few extracurricular activities to get the children involved in their school. The PTA mettings and programs were poorly planned and I usually didn't find out about them until the evening of the event. My children's school work was sent home about once a month. I feel my children's education has suffered and they will not be attending JTES this coming school year.
